  • Abstract:
Kerala has been witnessing large inflow of migrant labourers not only from the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Kamataka but also from other states like West Bengal and Orissa, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Manipur. There is also migrant flow to Kerala from Nepal. This has helped to offset the shortage of labour caused partly due to the out-migration to other states and emigration to other countries. Higher wages for unskilled labour in the state, large opportunities for employment and shortage of local labour provided the necessary pull. The migrant workers are employed as construction workers, casual labourers, agricultural and plantation workers, road workers, domestic workers, carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians etc. They are also employed in jewellery making, cashew processing units, plywood factories, flour mills, quarries, brick kilns, hotels, slaughterhouses, petrol pumps etc. The contribution of migrant labourers in the economic development of the state is very significant. Hence the satisfaction of these employees in their work and family is highly important for the state and the respective sectors where migrant labourers are employed. With a noble view to improve the working environment and living conditions of migrant labourers, a work-life balance study was conducted to find out how work and life are being balanced by the labourer. Work- life balance is very unique in the case of migrant labourers since it possesses characteristics that are different from other work groups. This study tries to explore the peculiar characteristics of work-life balance of migrant labourers especially engaged in construction sector of Kerala and to investigate how work-life balance affects the satisfaction and productivity of the labourer. For this, the study treated work life balance as a multidimensional construct having eight dimensions which includes work demands, work constraints, work resources, supervisory support, personal demands, family responsibilities, family resources, and family support. The influence of the above said eight latent constructs on the work-life balance of migrant labourers is revealed through the study. The study intends to empirically prove the relationship of work life balance with the work satisfaction and family satisfaction, and also the effect of satisfaction level of the employee on productivity is examined.
